MARE ISLAND, Bay Area, CA
VDG supported the strategic redevelopment of Mare Island, a 1,000-acre historic naval shipyard located 23 miles north of San Francisco at the convergence of the Napa River and San Pablo Bay. One of the Bay Area’s largest remaining waterfront redevelopment sites, Mare Island combines a rich industrial legacy with significant long-term mixed-use potential.
Today, the Island supports more than 110 businesses and approximately 5,000 jobs across 3.6 million square feet of commercial, industrial, and office space. Existing ferry service, historic assets, entertainment venues, and residential communities provide a strong operational foundation.
VDG contributed to master planning, land use strategy, and phased implementation frameworks, aligning adaptive reuse, infrastructure coordination, waterfront access, and future development capacity. The integration of employment, housing, transportation, and public realm positioning reinforces Mare Island as a rare, multi-decade opportunity to transform a historic naval base into a resilient, destination-oriented waterfront district.
